Holy Cross Problems

Holy Cross Problems

Holy Cross is a great school, but it does have a few problems. We were presented with a chance to identify some problems and present possible solutions. Many are just minor problems, but some others are more sufficient.

During track season, we can get some serious practicing done. However, when it comes to High-Jump there is a serious problem. First off, the actual foam of the mat is completely disintegrating. You can't sit on it without getting dust in your eyes, much less jump. There are also multiple holes in the outer cover, which exposes a massive amount of foam and can seriously scratch you. Aso when jumping, loose asphalt/gravel and uneven ground can cause some serious slipping.

Pros and Cons of running surfaces: this website tells us how asphalt is bad for runners. and sure, it is high JUMP, but runnign is a big part of high jump. the entire approach to it is running. the article also states that asphalt is hard to fall on. However, in our situation with loose gravel chunks, falling is certainly not a problem
Many slips on our asphalt are much like these

My solution is to (hopefully) get a new high jump pit and cover.  We will no longer have an old, moldy high jump pit, and a means of preserving it better. Also, if we move the pit somewhere safer, such as some of our new blacktop, which is both level and smooth. with these adjustments, high jumpers will have less of a chance to slip and fall.
